2. How Do I Take Terra North Colostrum? |
Colostrum should be taken in larger doses when first starting (perhaps twice as much), with maintenance doses after desired results are obtained. Capsules: Colostrum has a half-life of 16 hours, so it is important to take it twice a day for maximal effect. The recommended dosage is two to four capsules twice a day. Each person's body assimilates and uses Colostrum in a different fashion, so you may need to experiment before deciding which dosage is right for you. Capsules should be taken on an empty stomach without food or any other supplements (at least 30 minutes before you eat or at least two hours after you eat).Capsules should be taken with 8-12 ounces of water. An empty stomach is necessary to wash the Colostrum capsules through the stomach into the intestine, where it primarily targets the immune system and contributes to the body's healing and growth factors. Most people take the initial dose before breakfast, and then again several hours after lunch (or an hour before dinner). Try to implement regular routine to avoid missing

3. Are there any laws that regulate bovine colostrum for human consumption in the United States, and is Terra North a licensed and inspected food processor, specifically for colostrum products? |
Absolutely. Terra North works directly with La Belle's primary food (colostrum) processing facility located in a state that regulates colostrum for human consumption as a dietary supplement. The Washington Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Food Safety Program regularly inspects our facilities. Also, colostrum falls under the guidelines set forth in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations - DSHEA.

Bovine colostrum is surprisingly similar to human colostrum in terms of digestibility and nutrients. In addition, scientific studies have shown that colostrum's highly-prized immune and growth factors are found in greater quantities in bovine colostrum than in human. read research on colostrum

6. Do pasture-fed dairy cattle produce inferior colostrum, when compared to cows that are fed a healthy well balanced diet? |
Successful U.S. Grade A dairies supply their cows a well balanced diet that includes multiple grain sources along with vitamin and mineral supplements. These diets definitely help to assure that the colostrum and milk produced is of the highest quality. We are not aware of any research claiming that pasture-fed cattle produce inferior colostrum. However, the possibility of environmental contaminants is a concern with pasture-fed cattle.

7. Do you have to be a USDA registered establishment to produce quality colostrum for the human market? |
La Belle does maintain two USDA registered establishment licenses for the preparation of veterinary pharmaceutical (biologic) products. However, a USDA registered establishment license does not guarantee quality colostrum for the human market place. The standards that the USDA inspectors hold our establishments to are every bit as stringent as those of our food inspectors, but they look at different aspects of the production process. There are several benefits to purchasing colostrum from a company that has USDA licensed facilities: The company is most likely a well-established firm that has a long history of producing quality colostrum products. They are also required by law to prove the efficacy of their products in actual clinical trials. These trials are conducted to prove that a particular product (colostrum), is indeed bioactive and has a proven benefit for its intended use. A veterinary biologic establishment does not produce feed grade products. Quite the contrary, a veterinary biologic is an animal pharmaceutical, and hence is held to very tightly controlled purity standards.
In regards to colostrum destined for the human market, Terra North follows the laws, protocols and facility requirements dictated by Washington's Food Safety Program. Terra North also uses current good manufacturing practices according to 21-CFR 110 (U.S. code), and has a well developed Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) program, following the requirements of Annex 5 of the U.S. Food Code.

8. Does Terra North collect from a large number of Grade A dairy cows to ensure that the colostrum contains the widest range of immune-factors |
La Belle, Inc. is currently approved by various state food and agriculture agencies to draw colostrum from a four-state region. Terra North has almost five thousand dairies, and 2.2 million head of dairy cows to draw from in these four states. (Which equals approximately 25% of all dairy cattle in the USA). Terra North can easily be considered one of the largest and most respected producers of colostrum in the world today.

9. Does freezing colostrum harm or reduce the potential benefits of the colostrum liquid? |
No, freezing colostrum does not harm the colostrum or reduce its dietary benefits. In fact it is healthier, because freezing obviously reduces risk of bacterial contamination that is of concern with raw colostrum maintained and transported in a liquid state. The consumer should feel confident that the integrity of the colostrum is maintained, because the colostrum moves from the cow directly into a freezer, where it is transported and then gently thawed and processed. We have discussed the process of freezing colostrum with lactating biologists, and they agree that freezing colostrum will not damage the immunoglobulin proteins or reduce their activities. (Mark McGuire, Ph.D. University of Idaho) |
10. Do I have to worry about possible pesticide or antibiotic contamination of the colostrum? |
No. We are fortunate to draw all of our colostrum from US dairies, whose safety and product quality are models for the rest of the world. Pesticide contamination of Grade A dairy cattle feed is tightly monitored and does not represent a problem for colostrum produced in the USA. (Pesticides may be a concern for colostrum produced outside the U.S.). Antibiotic usage (especially beta-lactam usage) is also tightly monitored. Beta-lactams are not allowed into the human milk supply, and hence not allowed in the human colostrum supply. Under state law we must ensure that our colostrum destined for the human market is beta-lactam (antibiotic) free.

11. I hear a lot about low fat colostrum versus whole colostrum, What is the differen |
With whole colostrum, you get the added benefits of the lipoproteins -including CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid), sphingomyelin, butyric acid, ether lipids, beta-carotene, and vitamins A and D that have anticancer potential (see Parodi, P.W., 1998, J Dairy Sci 82: 1339-1349). The benefit of a low fat colostrum is that gram/gram you get a higher level of immune factors. For instance, typical whole colostrum (first day colostrum) has an immunoglobulin content of 15 to 18% IgG wt/wt. Low fat colostrum has an immunoglobulin content of 19 to 22% IgG wt/wt. Low fat colostrum also has the added advantage of nearly twice the shelf life of whole colostrum. Terra North produces both of these products along with other concentrated colostrum products.
